While many have taken up the cause of sustainable and organic food, the story of the people who process and prepare our food often goes untold. Set in a slaughterhouse and steeped in magical realism, Slaughter City gives voice to these forgotten workers, wielding "passion, poetry, and wild strangeness" to protest labor exploitation, as well as grappling with issues of race and gender. Playwright Naomi Wallace weaves a tale of struggle and hope, presenting a deeply human story that addresses the lives and loves of the men and women behind the food we eat.

With a little help from his friends--and Facebook--freshman Michael Bloch is making a difference
By Wendy Edelstein, NewsCenter | 19 January 2010
BERKELEY — It didn’t take long for Michael Bloch to know he wanted to help the people affected by the disaster in Haiti. So the Berkeley freshman created a Facebook page to focus campus attention on the relief effort, and invited 100 of his friends from the social-networking site to join. Within 24 hours, nearly 1,100 people had become members of Haiti Earthquake Relief – UC Berkeley. By Tuesday, Jan. 19, the number had swelled to more than 2,500.
